Marcos de Diego wins Saturday's race with the Toyota GR86 Circuit Pack, while Felix Aparicio wins Sunday's race.
The second event of the GR Cup Spain was held this weekend at the MotorLand Aragón racetrack. It was the first time that the Toyota GR86 Circuit Pack drivers participated in the Racing Weekend.
As it happened in the opening race, held at the Jarama racetrack, the race track located in Alcañiz has lived a weekend filled with excitement. Evenness in the single-brand cup organized by Toyota Spain and Motor & Sport Institute (MSi) has been the predominant note, as the top three finishers were separated by just over a tenth of a second.
The action on track began on Friday, with the group test, where all the drivers made their first contact with the tarmac of MotorLand.
On Saturday, free practice 1 and 2, timed practice 1 and the first race of the races scheduled for the weekend were held. The qualifying ended with the pole for Adrián Ferrer, who set the best time, followed by Luis Carlos Pérez and Agustín Arce.
This start line changed radically during the race, as overtaking and changes of places took place. In turn, the track limits played a very important role, as several drivers were penalized, which allowed Marcos de Diego to take the final victory. Antonio Albacete took the second step of the podium, whilst Luis Carlos Pérez was third.
On Sunday we enjoyed the second timed practice and the second race, which again provided the fans with exciting duels with the Toyota GR86 Circuit Pack, fruit of how evenly matched the GR Cup Spain is as well as the drivers' talent.
This time it was Felix Aparicio who set the best time in the classification, followed by Ivan Riera and Adrian Ferrer, who was 0.158 seconds behind his rival.
Felix Aparicio kept the pace during the race and won the second race, although it was Ivan Riera who crossed the finish line in the first place, before being penalized by the stewards for having carried out start tests before the race itself. Thus, Ivan Riera was in second place, followed by Ignacio Rodriguez, who completed the podium.
After this event, the classification of the Toyota Spain and MSi Cup changes its leader, and now it is Marcos de Diego who moves up from second to first place. Meanwhile, Antonio Albacete moves up one position and is now second, while the third place is held by Ignacio Rodriguez and Jose Antonio Chico, who are tied on points.
The other six participants are in a tight fight, with barely eight points difference from each other.
The next GR Cup Spain event will be held in Valencia, at the Ricardo Tormo Race Track, from 13 to 15 September 2024.
