Adrián Ferrer now leads the GR Cup Spain (104 points), followed by Félix Aparicio (96 points) and Marcos de Diego (92 points).
The third event of the season of the GR Cup Spain, the single-brand cup organized by Toyota Spain and Motor & Sport Institute (MSi), was held this weekend (September 14 and 15) at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Cheste, as part of the Racing Weekend program.
After the collective test took place on Friday, in which all the registered drivers participated with the Toyota GR86 Circuit Pack, on Saturday the free practice sessions and the first timed practice sessions were held to make up the grid for the first race, which was also held on the same day. Adrián Ferrer was the fastest, followed by Iván Riera and Ignacio Rodríguez.
Thus began the first race, although after the first corner Ivan Riera overtook Adrian Ferrer to take the lead, which he kept until the end, becoming the first winner of the weekend. Meanwhile, the leader of the championship until Valencia, Marcos de Diego, had to retire after suffering a blow on the first lap. Ferrer managed to keep the second position after a nice fight with Riera, and Ignacio Rodriguez initially finished third, but was penalized with 5 seconds for exceeding the track limits. Thus, the third classified was Felix Aparicio, followed by Santi Castilla. Both drivers benefited, in turn, from the disqualification of Antonio Albacete.
Sunday began with the timed practice sessions, to set the starting grid for the second race of the GR Cup Spain in Valencia. Adrián Ferrer won again the pole position, followed by Iván Riera and Santi Castilla.
In this second race, Ferrer used his speed to his advantage and started leading the race. Both drivers, Ferrer and Riera, kept a nice fight until the last stages, in which they exchanged positions. Finally, Ferrer managed to win the second race of the weekend, ahead of Riera. Félix Aparicio finished third and Ignacio Rodríguez fourth.
Thus, the new leader of the GR Cup Spain is Adrián Ferrer, 8 points ahead of Félix Aparicio and 12 points ahead of Marcos de Diego. Ignacio Rodriguez is fourth, 14 points behind the leader, making the championship very open and exciting.
The next meeting of the GR Cup Spain will take place at the Jerez Race Track, on October 5 and 6, where it is expected that the parity between the participants will again be the dominant note of a new race weekend with the Toyota GR86 Circuit Pack.
