Marcos de Diego dominates the weekend taking the win in both races held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
The last event of the GR Cup Spain, the single-brand cup organized by Toyota Spain and Motor & Sport Institute (MSi), was held this weekend at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya with Toyota GR86 Circuit Pack.
With the title still undecided and with several drivers tied on points and with chances of aspiring to the top 3, the first timed practice sessions were held to set the starting grid positions for Saturday. Marcos de Diego set the best time, followed by newcomer Daniel Losada and third place for overall leader Adrián Ferrer.
In the first race, Marcos de Diego managed to make the difference from the first laps and took the victory. Behind him, Antonio Albacete Jr., after starting from the sixth place and after a great recovery, reached the second place, keeping a nice fight with Adrián Ferrer, who occupied the third step of the podium. Daniel Losada lost many places in the first lap, but even so, he finally finished fourth, at a very good pace.
Thus, and in the absence of Sunday's race, Adrián Ferrer, aged 15 and being the first time he competed in touring cars, scored the necessary points to be proclaimed as the first winner of the GR Cup Spain.
In Sunday's race, with eight drivers at the wheel of their Toyota GR86 Circuit Pack within a second of each other, Adrián Ferrer started from pole position, followed by Iván Riera and Antonio Albacete Jr. in third place.
With the lights already green, Adrián Ferrer held the first position, with Antonio Albacete Jr. second and Marcos de Diego third, after climbing from seventh place. With 16 minutes to go, Antonio Albacete Jr. momentarily took the lead of the race. Marcos de Diego also overtook Adrián Ferrer, who fell to third place and finally dropped out of the second race.
In a beautiful finish, it was Marcos de Diego who took the victory. Albacete Jr. finished second and Daniel Losada third, an excellent result in what was his debut in this single-brand cup. Santi Castilla finished fourth, Luis Carlos Pérez fifth and Albert Fàbrega, guest of Toyota Spain, who was racing for the first time, finished sixth. Iván Riera, struggling with problems, finished seventh.
Adrián Ferrer has been proclaimed champion of the GR Cup Spain with 172 points, in addition to taking the title of best Junior driver. Marcos de Diego was second (164 points) and the podium was completed by Antonio Albacete Jr (144 points). The overall championship classification is completed by: Iván Riera (132 points), Santiago Castilla (122 points), Ignacio Rodríguez (118 points), Luis Carlos Pérez (114 points), José Antonio Chico (92 points), Félix Aparicio (86 points), Miguel Villacieros (34 points) and Óscar Canales (21 points).
After five double-race events, the first edition of the GR Cup Spain is now history. The Toyota GR86 Circuit Pack will bring excitement to the Spanish circuits again in 2025, thanks to Toyota Spain and MSi.
