Adrián Ferrer leads the GR Cup Spain (147 points), followed by Marcos de Diego and Antonio Albacete, both with 124 points.
This weekend (October 5 and 6) the fourth event of the GR Cup Spain season was held at the Angel Nieto Racetrack in Jerez. The event was watched by 15,000 spectators, who could enjoy the parity and excitement offered by the drivers at the wheel of their Toyota GR86 Circuit Pack.
The single-brand cup organized by Toyota Spain and Motor & Sport Institute (MSi) began on Friday with a private practice session. On Saturday free practice and the first timed practice session were held, where Ivan Riera set the best time, followed by Adrian Ferrer and Ignacio Rodriguez, all three drivers barely apart by 4 tenths of a second.
The first race was one of the most beautiful and intensive shows of the season between the drivers of the GR Cup Spain for the different steps of the podium. Ivan Riera made good the pole position and was quickly positioned as leader, opening a gap with the chasing group. The existing equality in this single-brand cup was proved with different changes of positions in the group that was chasing the leader, made up of Ignacio Rodriguez, Adrian Ferrer, Luis Carlos Perez and Antonio Albacete. With 6 minutes to the end of the race, the Safety Car had to come out due to Antonio Chico leaving the track, which caused the race to regroup. Iván Riera took the lead again until the end, achieving the victory ahead of Adrián Ferrer and Ignacio Rodríguez
On Sunday the second round of timed practice was held, to determine the grid for the second race with the Toyota GR86 Circuit Pack. Ivan Riera was again on pole position, followed this time by Ignacio Rodriguez and Antonio Albacete.
Riera again set the pace from the first laps, although on this occasion he had more difficulties to get away from his immediate pursuer, Ignacio Rodriguez. Behind him, Adrián Ferrer, who had consolidated third position, finally had to give up the third step of the podium to Antonio Albacete.
The top 5 was also hotly contested by Luis Carlos Pérez, Marcos de Diego and Santi Castilla, while Mariano Alonso and Toyota Spain guests Daniel Cuadrado and Ignacio Crocicchia were making their debut in this event with the GR86 Circuit Pack.
Óscar Canales, who had abandoned in the first race, could go out on track in the second race, finishing in seventh position.
Thus, Adrian Ferrer continues to lead the overall GR Cup Spain, with Marcos de Diego and Antonio Albacete tied on points in second position (124 points), 23 points behind the leader, and Ignacio Rodriguez and Ivan Riera in third, also tied (118 points).
The next and final round, in which this first edition of the GR Cup Spain will be decided, will be held at the Montmeló Circuit on November 9 and 10.
