Until the last stage the difference between the first three classified was four tenths.
The Rallye Islas Canarias, third scoring event of the Spanish Rally Superchampionship, besides scoring for the European Championship (ERC), has shown the competitiveness of Alejandro Cachón and Borja Rozada with the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2. The Toyota Spain pair took the victory after a spectacular performance.
The rally started on Thursday afternoon, with the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Superspecial. In this stage, Alejandro Cachón could only be fifth, 3 seconds behind the first classified.
On Friday morning, the scene changed dramatically, as Alejandro opened with the third best absolute time of the rally and the best among the drivers of the Spanish Superchampionship. And it was in the third stage when the first absolute scratch of the Asturian driver was achieved, something that would be repeated in the fourth stage of the day, placing him as leader overall, 3.8 seconds ahead of Mathieu Franceschi. In the fifth stage, Cachón dropped down in the classification when he had a puncture in one of the front tires and lost 40.6 seconds to the leader.
However, the pair of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Spain and Teo Martin Motorsport, from the next stage would start a comeback that would be materialized in two consecutive scratches. Thus, Cachón finished the stage ninth in the European, 30 seconds behind the leader (Yoann Bonato), and third in the S-CER, more than 13 seconds behind Diego Ruiloba.
On Saturday six stages were still to decide the final positions, and Alejandro Cachón and Borja Rozada set their sights on victory from the first kilometers, finishing the first loop just 5.8 seconds behind Ruiloba and 5.2 seconds behind José Antonio Suárez. In stages 11 and 12 two new scratches of the GR Yaris Rally2 were achieved. At that point, the new leader was Suárez, with a lead of two tenths over Cachón, who in turn was two tenths ahead of Ruiloba.
And it was the last section (San Mateo-Valsequillo2, 11 km) where Alejandro Cachón and Borja Rozada scored what would be their fifth absolute scratch and the tenth among the S-CER drivers (the GR Yaris Rally2 of Toyota Spain being the car with the most scratches), to take the third step of the podium within the European and their first victory of the season in the S-CER. To this we must add that Alejandro Cachón has achieved the first podium for a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 in the European Championship.
With this excellent result, the duo of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Spain and Teo Martín Motorsport team leads the Spanish Rally Superchampionship with 100 points, four more than their immediate rivals, Diego Ruiloba and José Antonio Suárez, who are tied on 96 points.
The next round of the Spanish Rally Superchampionship will be the Rallye de Ourense, from June 15 to 16, also on tarmac.
Alejandro Cachón (DRIVER): “I'm very happy because, despite the puncture, we never threw in the towel, and we tried to close the gap that we had lost. I must congratulate the entire team of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Spain and Teo Martin Motorsport for the great work they have done. The GR Yaris Rally2 has worked exceptionally well and has allowed me to run a great deal. I'm already looking forward to the next rally”.
Borja Rozada (CO-DRIVER): “I think we have achieved a great victory in the Spanish Rally Superchampionship, even though the puncture made things quite difficult. It was very important to keep calm and take risks when we had to. Achieving the first victory of the championship and, at the same time, finishing the rally third in the European Championship is a great success”.
