The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Spain and Teo Martín Motorsport team pair is currently three points ahead of the second ranked team.
The 61st Rallye Princesa de Asturias (September 6 and 7), will be the comeback of the S-CER (Spanish Rally Championship) after the summer break and will open the second and crucial half of the season. The Asturian event is the sixth of the nine events in the calendar and the first of the two to be held in this autonomous community.
Alejandro Cachón and Borja Rozada did two days of testing prior to the rally, in which, in addition to using a new finish decoration, they tested for the first time the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 in wet conditions, which they had not done so far and which has been key to fine-tune their car to these conditions.
This is a well-known event to Alejandro Cachón, where he achieved an impressive win in 2022. Currently the driver of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Spain and Teo Martin Motorsport team leads the S-CER, with 3 points ahead of his immediate follower. The Toyota pair has managed to finish all rallies in podium positions, highlighting the victory achieved in the Rallye Islas Canarias.
The Rallye Princesa de Asturias features 133 timed kilometers divided into 11 stages. This year, the legendary Asturian event returns to its usual format, entirely on tarmac. On Thursday, September 5, the ceremonial start will take place on the centrally located Uría Street, followed by the shakedown and the qualifying stage, which will be the first of the five special stages on Friday. The remaining six stages will be raced on Saturday.
The weather forecast announces rain, a crucial challenge in the final classification that the participating teams will have to handle to the best of their ability.
Alejandro Cachón (DRIVER): “I am very happy with the two days of testing we have carried out. We tested the car in tough conditions as it rained a lot and as the cars went by, the road got muddy and slippery. We are glad as we never tested the car in these conditions and the data we have collected will come in handy for this rally as well as for future rallies. The Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 is performing very well and once again, the team has done a great job. We are very confident ahead of this rally to maintain our lead in the championship”.
Borja Rozada (CO-DRIVER): “It has been a productive two days of testing given the data we have gathered. We tested both in dry conditions and in continuous rain, something we could not do so far. The most positive thing is that the car performed very well in these circumstances and the team performed a great job once again. On the second day we focused on fine-tuning and on testing different set-ups for a rally that appears to be a wet one”.
