The Rallye de Llanes was marked by the difficult choice of tyres.
The Rallye de Llanes, which was held this weekend, was the seventh event in the Spanish Rally Superchampionship. A rally that was marked by changeable weather, which made it difficult to choose the right tyres for each stage.
The rally started on Friday with the shakedown and the qualifying stage, where Alejandro Cachón and Borja Rozada achieved the third fastest time.
In the afternoon, and after the opening ceremony, the first of the 5 stages of the first section took place. The mythical section of La Tornería, which was disputed under a heavy fog, ended with the third best time of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Spain and Teo Martín Motorsport team, who had opted for rain tyres against the dry tyres of their rivals, which, in the end, was not the right choice. Alejandro Cachón increased the pace in the second loop of the afternoon to set his first scratch of the rally, at the wheel of the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2. Thus, after the first stage, Alejandro Cachón and Borja Rozada were 8 seconds behind the rally leader.
On Saturday, with 105 kilometres of timed stages still to go and everything still to be decided, the two runs through the Nueva-Labra stage were cancelled, while in the Collía-Carme stage, Alejandro scored another scratch to face the decisive afternoon of the rally, 5.8 seconds behind the leader.
In the TC-10, Cachón and Rozada moved up one position in the overall and in the TC plus, the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 driver added a new best time, which also allowed him to score the 3 additional points awarded in this stage and to stay 9 seconds behind the leader before the last two stages.
In TC-12, Alejandro Cachón and Borja Rozada achieved a new scratch, to be 5.4 seconds behind the leader before the last special stage. A section, TC-13, which did not allow them to close the gap, finishing the Rallye de Llanes in second position, which is the seventh consecutive podium of the season for the Toyota España team, which continues as leader of the S-CER with two events to go.
The next event of the championship will be the Rally of Cataluña (18-19 October), which will be held on gravel.
Alejandro Cachón (DRIVER): 2It was the most difficult rally of the season because of the tyre choice. The mistake we made in the first stage on Friday with the tyres weighed us down. After that, I think we had a very good rally, we got the three extra points from the TC plus and we are still leading the championship, so we are very happy. It was a pity that the two passes through Nueva-Labra were cancelled, as we missed two opportunities to close the gap. Next in our mind is the Rally de Cataluña, a gravel event and where we will go out to win, as the car has shown that it is as competitive on gravel as on tarmac”.
Borja Rozada (CO-DRIVER): “It was a typical Llanes rally, with a very changeable weather. The mistake we made in the first loop on Friday penalised us for the rest of the rally. Even so, we are very happy with the result, because we are still leading the championship and we are looking forward to gravel, a terrain that the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 is also very well suited to”.
