The next event, where the title will be settled in the S-CER, will be the Rallye de Pozoblanco
The RallyRACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada was the eighth qualifying round for the S-CER (Supercampeonato de España de Rallyes) and it was the last but one event of the season, involving the comeback to gravel in both competitions.
The rally started on Friday with the shakedown in Salou, the qualifying stage. Alejando Cachón and Borja Rozada, drivers of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Spain and Teo Martín Motorsport team, set the seventh best time, the opening ceremony and the first timed stage was held at night, in the middle of Salou's promenade, where the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 of the S-CER leaders set the third best time.
Saturday, with 7 more timed stages, began with the longest of the rally (23 kilometers), in which Alejandro Cachón and Borja Rozada set the best time, with a significant difference with respect to their immediate pursuers in the fight for the title, Diego Ruiloba and José Antonio Suárez.
Even so, the Toyota and Teo Martin Motorsport pair did not slow down their pace. In the TC plus they set the second best time, which allowed them to score two additional points. After a new pass through the stage of Salou, Cachón focused on managing his advantage, and after the first loop of the day he had a 9-second advantage over the second classified, at that time, Pepe Lopez.
In the sixth stage, Alejandro Cachón and Borja Rozada lost the lead after a mistake, and were in second place, just 0.8 seconds behind the leader.
But in the seventh special stage, the classification changed again, as the Asturian driver of Toyota and Teo Martin Motorsport set a new best time, to be placed with 25.1 seconds ahead of Diego Ruiloba, while José Antonio Suárez abandoned the rally due to an off track, losing any chance of winning the title.
A new scratch for Cachón and Rozada, in the last stage, allowed them to achieve their third win of the season and increase their lead in the Spanish Rally Superchampionship, thus keeping the gap over Diego Ruiloba at 26 points.
The next and final event where the Spanish Champion will be crowned will be the Rallye Ciudad de Pozoblanco, on November 15 and 16. It will also be run on gravel, a surface on which the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 has proven to be very competitive.
Alejandro Cachón (DRIVER): “We are very happy, because it has been a very hard rally and despite having made some mistakes we have achieved the third place. The Toyota has once again demonstrated its competitiveness on gravel and now we have to look forward to the Pozoblanco Rally, where the title will finally be decided. I already know this rally as I did it last year which makes me feel more confident, yet the fight for the championship depends on us”.
Borja Rozada (CO-DRIVER): “We are very pleased with the win and for being competitive in every rally, even when, as in this case, it is new to Alejandro. We came close to celebrating the championship, but with the abandonments of Pepe Lopez and 'Cohete' it wasn't possible. Now it is time to get ready for the Pozoblanco Rallye, where we will seek victory, because, although we depend on ourselves, we prefer to go out and win rather than keep track of Diego Ruiloba's result”.
