The Rallye Rías Baixas is the fifth event of the season, both in the S-CER and for the Toyota single-brand cup drivers in the GR Yaris RZ Cup.
The 57 Rallye Rías Baixas, which takes place from 4 to 6 July, is the fifth round of the nine that make up the calendar of the S-CER ( Spanish Rally Superchampionship). In turn, it also scores for the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup, being the fifth of the eight events of the single-brand cup organized by Toyota Spain, Toyota Caetano Auto and MSI. This year, the Galician rally returns to the top of Spanish motorsport, since it was last contested in 2015, and marks the passing of the equator in both the S-CER season and the TGR Iberian Cup.
TOYOTA GAZOO RACING SPAIN
For Alejandro Cachón, the tough Galician rally will be a new challenge in this 2024, given that it will be the first time he participates in it. Even so, the Asturian driver is confident of maintaining the good series of results and getting on the podium once again, as he did in Lorca (2nd), Sierra Morena (3rd), Canarias (1st) and Ourense (3rd). This regularity makes him only two points behind the current leader of the championship, José Antonio Suárez.
The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Spain and Teo Martin Motorsport team have a good feeling after seeing the potential of the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 in the past Rallye of Ourense. They hope to be just as competitive in this event, as the stages and tarmac are somewhat similar, even though this time they are faster and have better grip.
As usual, Alejandro Cachón and Borja Rozada carried out a pre-rally test to try out different configurations and adapt the GR Yaris Rally2 to the particular characteristics of the Rías Baixas.
Furthermore, the Teo Martín Motorsport team will enter a second Toyota GR Yaris Rally2, with Dani Berdomás and Brais Mirón. Thus, the champions of the TGR Iberian Cup 2023 will again wear the colors of Breogán Motor, who has given them the opportunity to take part in this event.
The rally has 124.68 timed kilometers, divided into 10 special stages and two stages. The protocol start is scheduled for Thursday, prior to the race starting on Friday afternoon and finishing on Saturday, at 20:00 hours.
TOYOTA GAZOO RACING IBERIAN CUP
The Rallye Rías Baixas is one of the great novelties of this season within the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup. Specifically, it is the fifth event of the year and the third that the Toyota GR Yaris RZ Cup Toyota GR Yaris run on tarmac.
Bruno Bulacia (CSM Automoció) arrives at this rally as the outstanding leader (91 points), after having climbed to the top of the podium in Lisbon. This victory was his first win on tarmac in the TGR Iberian Cup, a surface on which he had not been as comfortable as on gravel. Therefore, in Galicia he is once again a clear favorite for the final victory. Javi Villa (Asturhíbrido), after the setback in Lisbon, where he had to retire in the first stage, is currently in second position, 20 points behind the leader (71 points), and will try to close the gap in this rally to remain in the running for the title. Miguel Campos (Macedo & Macedo GTW Racing), who finished second in the Portuguese event, is only 11 points behind the Asturian driver (60 points).
Pedro Lago (Toyota Caetano Auto), fourth in Lisbon, and Josep Bassas (IPPON Motor Vallés), who finished third in Portugal, are in a close fight for the fourth position in the overall classification, only 5 points apart. Both drivers are closely followed by José Lamela (Breogán Group), who is 4 points behind Bassas and 9 points behind the Portuguese driver.
Manuel Martins, José Mulero (Labasa) and Iván Raña (Breogán Group) close the list of registered drivers. Raña, famous Olympic triathlete and world champion in this speciality, will be competing in his second rally with the GR Yaris RZ in the TGR Iberian Cup, after having made his debut in Lisbon.
Alejandro Cachón (DRIVER): “We are very happy with the work done in the pre-rally test, as I think we have made a good tuning and everything is quite clear. This is a rally in which the stages are faster than the ones of the past Ourense Rally, and in which the second-pass gravel will be very noticeable. Although it will be the first time I run in Vigo, I expect to push for the leading positions from the very first moment”!.
Borja Rozada (CO-DRIVER): “Undoubtedly, this will be a tough rally because of the complexity of the stages. We are currently second in the championship and, of course, we intend to recover the championship lead. I think the fans who come to the event will enjoy a really exciting rally in which the differences will be very small. It is a rally that brings back very good memories, since I got my first podium in 2006"
